PRF - Pasture, Rangeland & Forage insurance

"Everyone always complains about the weather, but nobody ever does anything about it."

Until now...

The USDA Risk Management Agency has developed new risk management tool. Beginning in 2010, Kansas and Missouri producers can insure their hay and pasture against less than historical average precipitation. The tool is called Pasture, Rangeland & Forage or PRF. It is based on the average rainfall data from 1948 to present, as calculated for your land by NOAA.  If there is a less than average rainfall in your area, there is a payment. When cattle, or hay and forage yield suffer, the policy pays.

Pasture Rangeland and Forage (PRF)

PRF is a new risk management tool available in 2010 for Kansas and Missouri Livestock and Hay and Forage producers provided by the USDA Risk Management Agency.

Hay Guard™?

Hay Guard™ is a product that protects your down hay against rain.  Please be advised that Hay Guard™ is not a Federal crop insurance program but a proprietary program available only through Central Crop Insurance Services. Contact us for details.

Overview:
PRF  is an easy, fair insurance program that fits into a viable risk management strategy for Kansas and Missouri hay and pasture producers. The RMA has added considerable financial incentives to encourage producers to buy PRF with liberal coverages, below cost premiums, and flexible coverage.

  • You must elect the PRF coverage before November 30, 2009
  • You choose the coverage you want for pasture and hay.
  • You choose the rainfall trigger starting at 90% of historical average.
  • You choose the dollar coverage that fits your need PRF will work with other USDA programs like SURE and is an alternative to NAP.

Then, you sit back and wait to see if it rains. If it rains, that is wonderful because you will have the pasture and hay you need for grazing or haying, but if it does not rain more than your chosen "trigger index", then a loss payment will be made to you. No action is needed by you or an adjuster. Your loss check comes in the mail!
